Warts are quite common skin nuisances that can make you feel so self-conscious, you try to cover them up if they’re in an exposed location. They’re so common in fact, that about one-third of children and teens are affected by them, while about three to five percent of adults contend with warts.

Fortunately, wart removal requires just a simple and quick in-office procedure, and then you’re on your way, not looking for new ways to conceal them.

As a board-certified family physician, Dr. Shamala Mohanasundaram masterfully treats a wide range of conditions in her office, and wart treatment is one of the minor skin procedures she’s versed in performing. She provides expert treatment in an atmosphere that’s always warm and welcoming.

Why did I develop a wart?

Warts are bumps on your skin that are caused by the human papillomavirus, otherwise known as HPV. There are over 100 strains of HPV and most aren’t very contagious, except for the strains that are transmitted sexually and put you at risk for certain cancers.

These warts can take a while to become visible, and it’s thought that they develop when HPV enters your system through a minute skin wound. Common skin warts can go away in time, but people often turn to home treatments too.

Warts most commonly appear on your fingers, hands, toes, and sometimes in other locations of your body. They can start out pretty small but often grow to the size of a pencil eraser. Warts are usually similar in tone to your skin or take on a gray hue, and are often scaly and rough in texture.

What treatments are available for warts?

There are over-the-counter topical treatments you can get at the drugstore for warts, and sometimes they work, but they take a long time.

There are times when it’s best to seek care from a medical professional when you have warts:

  • When one wart becomes a cluster
  • If your wart causes pain or discomfort
  • If your wart or the skin around it bleeds
  • If you have an autoimmune condition

It’s important to get your warts treated also if you live with diabetes, especially if they’re on your feet.

How will my warts be treated?

Before Dr. Shamala treats your warts, she examines them and talks to you about how they developed and if they’re causing you any discomfort or other problems. With this information, she determines whether she will opt for chemical cautery removal or electrocautery removal of the wart or warts.

Chemical cautery involves using chemical solutions that remove the wart. A common one is a salicylic acid, and Dr. Shamala is able to apply a stronger chemical solution in her office than you would get with a store-bought product. After she removes your wart, she recommends how to care for the treated area afterward.

Dr. Shamala also removes warts by the electrocautery or thermocautery methods. She treats the wart by using an electric current that moves in either one direction (direct current) or an alternating one, which reverses directions periodically. The heat that each current produces is directed to a resistant metal wire electrode which eliminates the wart.

As with chemical cautery, Dr. Shamala tells you how to care for the treated area as it heals.

Advantages of in-office wart removal

When you visit Dr. Shamala for in-office wart removal — or any other minor skin procedure for that matter — your experience is quick and comfortable, with immediate results and no downtime. You also get Dr. Shamala’s expertise and skill and forego the uncertainty and lengthy treatment time that home treatments involve.

Don’t live with the discomfort or embarrassment of your warts another day. Call our office to schedule a wart removal appointment or book one online.
